Surface finishing improves the appearance, protection and functional performance of aluminum die cast components. The correct finishing process depends on the alloy, casting condition, application environment and customer specification.
The first stage is normally cleaning and removal of casting residue. Gates, overflow material and flash must be trimmed before the component moves to grinding or blasting.
Grinding may be used to smooth parting lines, gate locations and selected visible surfaces. The process must be controlled carefully because aggressive grinding can alter dimensions or create inconsistent appearance.
Blasting provides a more uniform surface texture and can prepare the component for coating. It is commonly used when the natural casting surface needs to be cleaned or visually standardized.
Powder coating or plastic spraying can add color and improve environmental protection. Before coating, the component must be clean and free from oil, dust and loose particles.
Areas requiring electrical contact, bearing installation or precision assembly may need to remain uncoated. These surfaces should be masked or machined after finishing, depending on the product specification.
Coating quality can be evaluated through appearance inspection, thickness measurement, adhesion checks and corrosion testing. Salt spray testing may be used when long-term coating durability is important.
