Precision CNC Machining After Aluminum Die Casting

Die casting is highly efficient for producing complex aluminum shapes, but many components still require precision machining before they can be assembled.

CNC machining is commonly used for bearing seats, datum surfaces, threaded holes, positioning slots, stepped bores and sealing interfaces. These features often require tighter tolerances than the casting process alone can provide.

The machining process begins with fixture design. A stable fixture must hold the casting without causing deformation, while also ensuring that critical features remain correctly positioned relative to the selected datums.

Tool paths are then programmed according to the component geometry and drawing requirements. Cutting tools, spindle speed, feed rate and coolant application are selected based on the aluminum alloy and machining depth.

Complex structures can often be completed within a controlled machining setup. This reduces repeated clamping and helps maintain positional accuracy between related holes and surfaces.

Quality control begins with first-piece inspection. Critical dimensions are measured before batch production starts. During production, dimensions, appearance, flatness and machining conditions are checked at defined intervals.

Threaded features may also require plug-gauge inspection, while bearing locations and precision bores can be verified using coordinate measuring equipment.

The objective is not simply to remove material. Precision machining must create a component that fits correctly, assembles smoothly and performs reliably in its final application.

Combining die casting and CNC machining under one coordinated process can also reduce tolerance misunderstandings between separate suppliers and improve overall production consistency.
